81% Spam
July 22nd 2008 01:34
ArsTechnica says that 81% of all email sent in June were spam. That number comes from messagelabs who scans 3 billion emails per day.
"Different socioeconomic factors and levels of security awareness" are the reason for varying spam levels from state to state." Says a spokesperson from Messagelabs.
Translation- It depends on how educated your users are.
I will make this short, but no matter how many firewalls you put up and and how many filters are in place if people are still opening emails because they have a birthday card from a "family member" then the spammers will win. Of course, we will never be able to get rid of spam so we have companies that have to adapt and overcome on a daily basis to fight this stuff and some do a great job in a business environment. The issue is more in the home space where there are not as many controls to save you from yourself.
Here is my list of spam prevention dos and donts:
Don't EVER reply to a spam message!
Get a spam filter:
Yes your internet provider will filter some but not enough.
MailWasher is good for the home, but there are a ton more.
Don't open email from people you don't know.
Don't forward emails you got from someone you dont know.
Don't click on links unless you know where they came from.
Use good passwords!
If someone does get your address make sure they wont be able to guess your password is 1234 or the same as you email address.
I also found a story where Bill Gates said we would be rid of spam by the year 2006.
Oh well, cant be right about everything.
Peace.

Spam is a massive problem - not that we get it, but that the spam filters make it tough for emails to get through. I still get heaps of spam, but actual people have trouble emailing me!
