BrightKite, Twitter and Ping, Oh My!
July 25th 2008 02:07
The other day I listened to the Windows Weekly podcast (geeky, I know) but the host was saying how when people email him direct with questions it is kind of a waste because no one else benefits from the answer like they do if the person uses Twitter to post the question and he can share the answer with everyone. That is one of the beauties of social networking for me. The sharing of information among people you may not usually share with.
Today I had something cool happen with several social net tools today, here's the story.
I'm using a tool called Ping.FM that will allow you too update a ton of social sites from one page. It's great, check it out if you are a user in multiple networks. There was a service on the list called BrightKite that I thought would be cool to use. Basically it is a location based micro-blog like Twitter but it will also post your position with the message and show you who is around you as well. It uses GPS and cell phone triangulation to figure out where you are and you can also check in and tell it where you are located as well. iPhone has a similar app but BrightKite works on lots of devices.
I needed an invite to use this Brightkite, I went googleing and no love. Did a Facebook update asking for one, nothing. Then I did a general Tweet asking for one, about 10 minutes later I got a direct message saying who I should contact. I sent them a Tweet asking for an invite an had one in about 20 minutes.
Even if you dont "get it" on the whole social networking concept that is pretty cool. It also made me think of what Paul Thurrott (windows weekly host) was saying. Yes we all have our little group of friends in our networks and that is no doubt great but what about the marketing and support of other brands and products via the social network. I now am able to use a service I had no access to earlier today because of a couple Tweets. ABC actually did a story on Twitter yesterday and how companies are using it to support there customers. I think it is a wonderful medium that companies would be foolish not to explore. So all you business owners need to brush up on your social networking skills. Even if you're not engaged, you need to be aware.
Check out this "Twitter in plain english" video if you need some more info. Its very simple to understand.
Peace.
