iTunes, Meet the Shark

May 30th 2008 12:00
Fridays are being designated musical musings at midday to get us geared up for the weekend.

Let me start by saying I am a huge fan of streaming music on the internet. It blows regular radio away. I like it better than building my own playlists from say, iTunes because I will get to hear songs that I may not know. Today's post about an online service that you may want to check out if you haven't already called Grooveshark. One thing that usually bums me out is that when I search for Christian music that may be a little edgier (Pillar, Skillet, Etc.) I get about 12 songs and thats it. Not so here.

There is a lot going on at Grooveshark. Here is how they describe their service:

* Grooveshark is an online music sharing community that rewards you for sharing your music.

* Grooveshark allows you to legally download high quality MP3s. They are DRM free, which means you can play them on any device.

* Grooveshark is a peer to peer program with a massive library of songs. They have built there own sharing network to allow people to legally (yes it's legal) download songs. They also filter out songs that dont meet their standards of quality so you don't download garbage.

* Grooveshark allows you to interact with other music lovers like yourself. They have a social networking type spin on their community that lets music lovers talk about and recommend music to other users.

* Grooveshark rewards you for sharing your music, and gives you a cut of the profits for songs you sell. If you share a song and someone buys it based on your recommendation, you get paid. Pretty cool huh? You have to sign up for an account like everything else and they will send you a confirmation since this is still a private beta project.

Another thing I love is that you can go to www.groovesharklite.com and just search for a song or artist and start streaming. No account or setup needed.

If you have a service you use that may not be on the radar, or even one you just love a lot, I would love to read your comments about it.

Peace
